BTS launches national COPD audit
A new audit programme is to measure and report on COPD in England and Wales, the British Thoracic Society (BTS) has announced.
Launched at its Winter meeting, the audit will be clinically led by the Royal College of Physicians (RCP), the BTS and the Primary Care Respiratory Society (PCRS-UK) in partnership with the British Lung Foundation.
The audit will commence in early 2013 and will run for three years, with the option of extending it to five. It has been commissioned by the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP) on behalf of the DH, and will form part of the National Clinical Audit and Patient Outcomes Programme (NCAPOP).
Respiratory disease is the third leading cause of death in England, with approximately 23,000 people dying from COPD each year. COPD is also one of the principle reasons for emergency admissions to hospital.
The audit will bring together primary and secondary care along with rehabilitation and patient experience, to measure and report on the delivery of care as defined by standards and guidance.
