Monitor to authorise the 152nd NHS foundation trust
Monitor has announced that it is creating the 152nd NHS foundation trust by granting the status to Bradford District Care NHS Trust.
The community and mental health provider will assume the status as of 1 May 2015.
Whilst Bradford District Care NHS Trust has been granted foundation trust status, it must update Monitor on the progress of planned improvements in how it is run.
The community health, mental health and specialist learning disabilities service provider has been part of a thorough assessment process. All elements of the trust’s care and business have been inspected, including the quality of its services, its financial performance and leadership and governance.
The announcement follows a successful inspection by the Care Quality Commission last year, who rated the quality of the trust’s services as good overall, with outstanding features in certain services.
As a foundation trust it will be free from central government control, able to retain any surpluses it generates to invest in new services, and borrow money to support these investments; and accountable to its local community, with local people able to become members and governors.
Simon Large, chief executive of the trust, said: “I am delighted that we have achieved our goal of becoming a foundation trust. This is confirmation that we are a well-governed organisation with strong plans in place, but more importantly it reflects the dedication and commitment of our staff and volunteers in providing high quality services for local people.
“We are dedicated to providing effective, personalised, safe care which will benefit the whole community. As a foundation trust we can now work closely with members of the public across Bradford, Airedale, Wharfedale and Craven and our local partners to develop services. ”
