NHS seven-day working group to be launched
Seven-day working is to be considered for implementation across the NHS, it has emerged.
The NHS Commissioning Board is due to announce the set up of a group to look into the complications and barriers to seven-day working tomorrow, when it publishes planning guidance for the NHS.
Research suggests that patients are more likely to die if admitted to hospital over the weekends, due to a drop in routine services such as scans, operations and a lack of senior staff on duty.
Health minister Lord Howe said: “Offering easier access to hospital consultants, GPs and routine hospital services seven days a week will reduce delays and ensure that patients get seen and treated by experienced healthcare professionals.”
NHS medical director Sir Bruce Keogh told the BBC: “It is time for the NHS to offer more routine services at the weekend, in addition to emergency services. This will be a big cultural change, but our focus should be on convenience and compassion for those seeking our help.”
The BMA has said it is open to considering seven-day working.
