NHSBT boosts organ donation by 50%
Organ donation increased by 50% over the last year, NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) has found.
The annual review for 2012/13 showed an increase in blood stocks by 30% to manage the impact of one-off events, as well as recruiting 120,000 new young donors and receiving the highest customer satisfaction from 70% of hospitals.
Lynda Hamlyn, chief executive at NHSBT said: “Our achievements during the year are only possible because of the generosity of donors whose life saving gifts give hope to so many. Through the expertise of our staff we are able to transform those precious donations into high quality therapeutic treatments that benefit patients across the UK.
“More than 3,100 lives were transformed last year thanks to a 50% increase in deceased organ donation. This was a challenge few thought possible when it was set by the Organ Donation Taskforce in 2008. I am enormously proud that five years’ hard work and dedication from staff across the country has delivered so much for patients on the transplant waiting list.”
