Time to move on?
New evidence released proving that competition can improve healthcare standards, efficiency and costs has come at a crucial time, just ahead of the vote on the Health and Social Care Bill in the House of Lords this week, and shortly after Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has demanded amendments to the reforms.
Clegg wants to ensure that voters know he is against any ‘American-style’ privatisation ofEngland’s hospitals – although of course reformers deny that was ever the intention. However, evidence from think tankReformhas demonstrated that this might not be such a bad thing – it may, in fact, be a positive way forward for healthcare in theUK.
Since its launch in 1948, the NHS has provided the UK with comprehensive healthcare, and it is an institution we should be proud of having. Nevertheless, times have changed and the NHS as it stands is no longer as effective as it once was. It is time to realise that as the world moves on, so must the NHS.
