Wales’ leading medical professional, Sir Dr Frank Atherton, has officially announced his resignation after an impactful tenure of eight and a half years as the Chief Medical Officer for the Welsh Government.
The announcement marks the end of a significant era in Welsh healthcare leadership. Sir Frank, who transitioned to Wales after a prestigious role in Canada, has been instrumental in providing independent, expert advice to the Welsh Government on critical health sector issues. His tenure is notably marked by his pivotal role in navigating Wales through the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Under his leadership, Wales implemented robust health measures that were crucial in managing the pandemic's impact.
Sir Frank said:
“It has been a privilege to act as CMO and a highlight of my professional career to have served the people of Wales during this incredibly challenging time.
“I would like to thank all those other civil servants, who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes, who have assisted me for almost a decade in this role.”

Beyond the pandemic, Sir Frank has consistently supported the National Health Service (NHS) in Wales through annual winter pressures and recurring flu outbreaks. His guidance has been invaluable in ensuring the resilience and responsiveness of the Welsh health system during these demanding periods.
Commenting on Sir Frank’s decision to step down, Welsh Health Secretary Jeremy Miles said:
