The Centre for Mental Health has announced the appointment of three distinguished new trustees to its Board: Dr Ariel Breaux Torres, Emma Mamo, and Philip Ross.
This strategic move follows an open recruitment exercise conducted last year, aimed at bolstering the Centre's mission to advance mental health equity and social justice.
Dr Ariel Breaux Torres joins the Board as the Head of Mental Health Equity at Mind. A clinical forensic psychologist, Dr Breaux Torres brings a wealth of experience from her work in prisons and forensic hospitals, where she has witnessed the profound intersections between racism, mental health, and criminalisation. Her commitment to addressing systemic inequities and promoting racial justice will be invaluable to the Centre's ongoing efforts.
Emma Mamo, a specialist in workplace wellbeing, also joins the Board. With a robust background that includes her previous role as Head of Workplace Wellbeing at Mind, and significant experience with Scottish Action for Mental Health (SAMH) and Mencap, Emma is well-versed in creating inclusive and supportive work environments. Her expertise will be crucial in guiding the Centre's initiatives to improve mental health in the workplace.

Commenting on her appointment, Mamo said:
“I’m delighted to join Centre for Mental Health as a trustee. I have long admired its work in challenging injustices and campaigning for equality – values that strongly resonate with me. With 17 years in the mental health sector and past collaborations with the Centre on welfare reform and employment, I’m passionate about driving systemic change and supporting its vital mission to improve and protect mental health for all.”
Philip Ross, co-founder of Safehinge Primera and Chair of the Design in Mental Health Network, completes the trio of new trustees. Philip's dedication to enhancing the quality of mental health hospital environments through innovative design solutions is well-recognised. His leadership in the Design in Mental Health Network, a not-for-profit organisation, underscores his commitment to improving mental health care facilities.
Centre for Mental Health Chair Michael Morley welcomed the new trustees, saying:
“We are delighted to welcome Ariel, Emma and Philip as our new trustees, strengthening the range of expertise on our Board to support the innovative policy and research work of the team at the Centre. I’m confident that their experience and dedication will advance our work to pursue social justice in mental health.”
