In a remarkable milestone, almost 70,000 individuals grappling with mental health challenges received employment support last year through the NHS Talking Therapies Programme.
This represents an impressive increase of nearly two-thirds compared to the previous year, according to the latest NHS figures.
Newly released data also reveals that approximately 1.8 million referrals were made to the Talking Therapies Programme last year, with over 1.2 million people commencing treatment. The NHS Talking Therapies Programme aims to assist those who experience mental health issues such as anxiety or depression, and offers patients the opportunity to connect with employment advisors if they wish to explore or receive help with finding and maintaining employment.
Upon enrolling in the programme, individuals are paired with employment advisors who can provide a wide range of support, from job search assistance to CV writing, interview preparation, advice on workplace adjustments, and goal setting.
Claire Murdoch, NHS National Director for Mental Health, said:
“The NHS has heard for many years from patients struggling with their mental health that working and having a purpose can have a hugely positive impact.
“This is why I’m thrilled that NHS staff have helped more than 67,000 mental health patients with employment advice, because for many, having the right job and support is crucial in their mental health journey.
“If you or someone you know is worried about their mental health, please come forward, the NHS is here to help.”

Employment and mental health are intricately connected, with research indicating that employment support from an advisor, combined with therapy, can significantly improve symptoms of anxiety and depression. Last year, 67,794 people started receiving employment advice through the programme, a significant increase from the 41,907 individuals who received similar support in the previous year—a notable 62% rise.
The NHS Talking Therapies Programme is accessible to anyone, either through online registration or by contacting their GP. Notably, NHS figures show that 9 in 10 individuals received mental health support within six weeks of being referred to the service.
The rise in support comes following a recruitment drive to hire an additional 700 NHS employment advisors, with further recruitment efforts anticipated in the coming months. Today's announcement is further bolstered by analysis from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which found that the NHS Talking Therapies Programme can enhance monthly pay prospects while also increasing the likelihood of employment.
By providing comprehensive support that addresses both mental health and employment needs, the NHS Talking Therapies Programme continues to play a vital role in improving the well-being and financial stability of individuals across the UK.
