NHS recruitment records are being broken as the Scottish Government reveals more medical training posts have been filled at this stage of the year than ever before.
As of yesterday, 1,061 positions from 1,137 advertised have been filled according to NHS Education for Scotland figures.
This figure includes 100% fill rates in entry level roles in emergency medicine, radiology, anaesthetics, psychiatry and general practice.
At this point during last year’s recruitment year, 1,016 had been advertised and 961 filled – while this represents a higher fill rate, the overall number is 100 less than this year’s total.
“I am delighted to see that Scotland continues to be recognised as a highly desirable place both to live and pursue a career in medicine,” said the country’s public health minister, Jenni Minto.
“This is testament to our world-class medical education and training system as well as those working hard to prepare the next generation of doctors who will look after us in the future.”
The incoming trainees will start their roles this August; another round of recruitment is scheduled to begin before the end of the year, with those people taking up post next February.
“These results show that NHS Scotland continues to grow accordingly to meet the needs of its patients and I look forward to welcoming these new doctors into the health service,” added Minto.
